The Chausath Yogini temples have 64 images of the Yoginis in their
individual cells or shrine with intricate stone carvings circularly
arranged.
The Chausath Yogini Temple, located in Mitaoli village (also spelled
Mitawali or Mitavali) near Padavali in Morena district, approximately 40
kilometers from Gwalior is a remarkable historical monument. According
to an inscription dated 1323 CE (Vikram Samvat 1383), the temple was
constructed by the Kachchhapaghata king Devapala (r. c. 1055-1075). It
is believed that the temple was once a center of learning, particularly
in astrology and mathematics, based on solar transits.
Perched atop a solitary hill, the circular Chausath Yogini Temple, also known as the Ekattarso Mahadeva Temple,
offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.
The temple derives its name from the presence of numerous Shiva lingas
within its cells. As one of the few circular temples in India, it is
dedicated to sixty-four yoginis.
The temple’s distinctive circular architecture has often drawn comparisons to the Indian Parliament building (Sansad Bhawan).
